Vitro acquires exclusive rights to sell temperature-controlled vacuum insulation units


Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG Glass) announced that it has entered into an agreement with LandGlass and VIG Technologies to sell their Tempered Vacuum Insulated Glass (VIG) products in North America.

“LandGlass and their LandVac brand use the world’s best VIG technology, so their products are a natural addition to Vitro’s already extensive and proven product portfolio,” said Martin Bracamonte, vice president, Marketing and Innovation, Vitro Architectural Glass. “For Vitro customers, designers and other distribution partners, this agreement will open a whole new paradigm of high-performance glass possibilities.”

According to a press release, Vitro will begin offering temperature-controlled VIG units in North America from late autumn 2021. The company also plans to install LandVac equipment and begin manufacturing VIG units in its North American plants as the market for VIG products develops.

The new 8.3 mm hardened VIG units consist of two fully hardened glass panes separated by a lead-free metal seal and a vacuum chamber. The inclusion of fully tempered glass enables the LandVac VIG device to be used worldwide in extreme indoor and outdoor temperatures, which can lead to failures in non-tempered VIG devices.

VIG units deliver an R-value of 14, which is closer to the R-value of a traditional wall than glass, according to a press release.

“Building envelope materials with exceptional R values, such as VIG products, can significantly reduce the need for artificial heating and cooling,” said Bracamonte. “This reduction in energy consumption leads to a corresponding reduction in greenhouse gases. Vitro is proud to offer this new product platform as a further way of maximizing the environmental value of our products. “

VIG units can be used alone as a replacement for monolithic glass or as a replacement for interior lighting in a traditional 1-inch insulated glass unit (IGU), where they create a secondary air space and form a hybrid IGU. This significantly improves the thermal efficiency of the device, ensures better noise reduction and prevents condensation.

The VIG devices will be available with Solarban60 sun protection, Low-E coating from Vitro Glass. When a VIG unit is used as interior lighting in a hybrid IGU, the exterior light is available with the full range of Solarban coatings and Vitro-Glass substrates. VIG units will only be available from glass and window manufacturers through the Vitro Certified Network.

Vitro started in January Solarban R77 glass followed in March by Solar volt building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) glass modules, the product of the acquisition of Vitro from solarnova, a Germany-based manufacturer of BIPV technology.
